Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church
Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church, Lutheran church in downtown Indianapolis, United States
Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church is a church building in downtown Indianapolis that combines Late Gothic Revival and Romanesque architectural styles. The red brick exterior features round-arched windows, a rose window, and buttresses topped with limestone caps.
The congregation first built a church in 1838, followed by a second structure, before constructing this third building between 1874 and 1887. This newest structure emerged during the period of growth for the Lutheran community in Indianapolis.
Inside, a large stained glass window portrays Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd, a design added during the 1915 renovation work. This window remains a focal point that draws the eye through the interior space.
The building is located on North Pennsylvania Street in downtown Indianapolis and now operates as The Sanctuary on Penn, serving as an event venue. Visitors should note that access may vary depending on scheduled events, so checking ahead about availability is recommended.
This building played a key role in the founding of five additional Lutheran congregations across Indianapolis. This influence made it an important center for spreading the Lutheran faith throughout the city and surrounding areas.
