The Dartmouth

The Dartmouth is a six-story apartment building in Indianapolis featuring nine by twelve bays in its facade. The exterior displays salt-glazed brown brick with limestone accents and a crenelated parapet line.

The building was constructed in 1890 during Indianapolis's period of rapid urban growth and represented new standards in residential architecture. It received National Register listing in 1983 for its historic importance.

The building was part of downtown living culture and shows how residents chose to live in apartment houses during that era. This type of structure shaped how the city center looked and developed over time.

The building is located downtown on East Michigan Street and is easy to reach on foot. The entire facade can be viewed from the street level.

The facade uses two different shades of center-scored brown brick that create a striking visual pattern. Three-sided projecting bays extend outward along the sides, adding depth to the composition.
