Old Stone House Museum, African-American heritage museum in Brownington, Vermont
The Old Stone House Museum is a four-story granite building in Brownington with twenty-two exhibition rooms. The spaces feature artifacts, documents, and collections related to Vermont's frontier period and regional development.
Alexander Twilight, the first African-American to earn a college degree in the United States, built this granite structure in 1836 as a student dormitory. The Orleans County Historical Society acquired the building in 1918 to prevent its demolition.
The building served as a student residence and reflects educational efforts in rural areas during the 1800s. Today it demonstrates how such spaces share local stories and regional heritage with visitors.
The museum operates from May through October with guided tours available on weekends. Groups can arrange special visits to customize their experience.
The building features massive granite blocks fitted together by hand, giving the structure exceptional durability. This construction method was uncommon for its time and keeps the building remarkably solid today.
