Nott Memorial, Historical library building at Union College, Schenectady, United States
The Nott Memorial is a 16-sided stone structure with brownstone walls and numerous stained glass windows that filter natural light throughout the interior. Built at Union College in Schenectady, this library building stands about 89 feet tall with a distinctive geometric shape.
Construction began in 1858 and was completed in 1879, with the building designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter to honor Union College president Eliphalet Nott. The project took over two decades and reflects the expansion of higher education during that era.
The Mandeville Gallery on the second floor hosts rotating exhibitions by recognized contemporary artists who explore modern themes. Visitors can encounter diverse artistic media and current social questions displayed there.
The main floor serves as a meeting space that accommodates about 400 people, while upper levels offer exhibition areas and informal gathering spaces. Access is available to visitors during campus operating hours.
The building contains 288 restored colored glass windows that filter natural light in a distinctive way throughout the interior. These windows create constantly shifting patterns of light on the walls and floors as the day progresses.
