Polo Grounds Towers, Public housing complex in Harlem, United States
Polo Grounds Towers is a housing complex with four residential towers rising on Coogan's Bluff in Upper Manhattan, containing 1,616 apartments spread across 11 acres. The buildings were developed to provide affordable housing for lower-income households in the area.
This complex was built on the site of the former Polo Grounds stadium, which housed the New York Giants baseball team until 1957. After the team relocated, the city transformed the location into residential housing for the community.
The Polo Grounds Community Center in this complex runs youth programs and social events for residents. These activities shape daily life here and create gathering spaces where neighbors connect and build community together.
The complex sits on elevated terrain with a significant height difference between the upper streets and lower sections near the Harlem River. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to navigate the slope when exploring the site.
The four towers were built on terrain with a natural drop of about 175 feet (53 meters) from Edgecombe Avenue down to the Harlem River level. This geological feature shapes how the buildings sit on the landscape and how they are visible from different parts of the neighborhood.
