Safe Harbor Dam, Hydroelectric power station in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
The Safe Harbor Dam extends 1484 meters across the lower Susquehanna River, generating power through seven turbines with a total capacity of 422.5 megawatts.
Construction of the Safe Harbor Dam began on April 1, 1930, during the Great Depression, with initial power generation starting on December 7, 1931.
The dam created Lake Clarke, transforming the previous terrain of Conejohela Valley into a recreation destination for fishing and water activities.
Two dedicated turbine units produce power specifically for Amtrak's 25 Hz traction system, while others generate standard 60 Hz electricity for general consumption.
The facility received recognition for environmental excellence in 2001 after removing 11,000 tons of debris from the river and implementing recycling programs.
