Sixtoe Mound

Sixtoe Mound is an archaeological site in Murray County comprising a low platform mound and village settlement spanning approximately 25 acres near the Coosawattee River. The remains reveal how people organized their living spaces and community layout in this location.

Systematic excavations took place between 1962 and 1965 under archaeologist Arthur Randolph Kelly as part of the Carters Dam project. These investigations provided insights into the settlement's timeline and how it was occupied.

The mound revealed dormitory structures on its summit and evidence of traditional diets including charred acorns, hickory nuts, and animal remains.
