Space City USA, Former theme park project in Madison County, United States.
Space City USA was an unfinished space-themed entertainment complex designed to spread across a large area between Huntsville and Decatur, Alabama. The project included multiple themed zones and featured planned modern transportation systems to guide visitors through the different sections.
The project began in 1959 under the name Time World as a major investment, but construction halted in 1966 before its planned opening. This stoppage occurred during the peak of the space race era when enthusiasm for such ambitious ventures eventually faded.
The park reflected the space exploration enthusiasm of the 1960s through its design choices, with simulated lunar settlements and themed zones that invited visitors into imagined worlds. The layout showed how deeply society of that era was captivated by space and future technology.
The location sits between Huntsville's modern space facilities and is relatively easy to reach when visiting the region. The deteriorated condition of the grounds requires caution, as many areas are not safely walkable or accessible.
The grounds were designed to include an artificial lake with paddle-wheel boats and a monorail system to quickly transport visitors between the scattered themed zones. These infrastructure plans reveal how ambitious the original vision for the project truly was.
