Union Mill Complex, Historic mill complex in Ballston Spa, New York, United States.
Union Mill Complex is a historic mill site in Ballston Spa consisting of three red brick buildings and dam ruins from the late 1800s positioned where Milton Avenue meets Prospect Street. The four-story L-shaped structure was renovated to house retail spaces, small businesses, offices, and dining venues across its 4 acres.
Built in 1844 for textile mills, the complex later housed a paper bag factory and then became a chocolate manufacturing facility in 1918. These shifts in purpose reflect the changing needs of the local economy over time.
The buildings show Second Empire features like a clock tower and ornamental details that speak to the industrial heritage of the site. These elements remind visitors of the craftsmanship and care put into industrial structures during the 19th century.
This site now functions as a retail and business center with various shops and restaurants scattered throughout the property. Visitors can walk through the grounds comfortably and experience the original architecture alongside modern use.
The lower stories incorporate reinforced concrete that replaced the original timber framing while keeping its industrial look intact. This structural upgrade shows how buildings were updated to last longer without losing their original character.
