Wickland, Historic mansion in Bardstown, Kentucky, United States.
Wickland is a three-story stone mansion located near Bardstown, Kentucky, built in the Georgian architectural style. The first and second floors share identical layouts with spacious halls and well-proportioned rooms arranged in a balanced design.
The building was constructed between 1813 and 1817 as a residence for Charles A. Wickliffe, a prominent figure of that era. It later became the home of three state governors, including two from Kentucky and one from Louisiana.
The mansion reveals how wealthy families arranged their daily lives during the early 1800s, with rooms designed to display status and host social gatherings. The layout and proportions reflect the values and lifestyle of people with significant regional influence.
The property spans 66 acres, providing ample space to explore the mansion and surrounding grounds. Interior tours are available during the warmer months, allowing visitors to examine original architectural details and furnishings up close.
During construction, the Wickliffe family lived in a separate two-story brick building on the grounds rather than in an incomplete mansion. The property also features a heated outhouse, an unusual luxury for that era and location.
