Knobs State Forest encompasses 2,035 acres of land with upland hardwoods, including white and chestnut oaks that form 60 percent of the tree cover.
The Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund purchased this land from Dr. James G. Kuhns and his sister for 3.3 million dollars in 2006.
The forest functions as an educational center where local organizations conduct programs about forestry management, conservation methods, and environmental protection.
The forest contains 5.8 miles of maintained trails for hiking and wildlife observation, with two small parking areas near the entrance for visitors.
This protected area holds 198 documented plant species and connects to Bernheim Arboretum through a designated wildlife corridor established in 2018.
