Rutherfurd Observatory

Rutherfurd Observatory sits atop Pupin Physics Laboratory and houses two domes containing different telescopes for astronomical observations and research. The facility operates several instruments, including portable Dobsonian reflectors and a Cassegrain telescope with an 11-inch aperture mounted in the smaller dome.

The observatory bears the name of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd, an astronomer and university trustee who supported Columbia University between 1858 and 1884. His legacy as both a scientist and institutional leader helped establish this site as a center for astronomical research.

The observatory provides public access through organized observation nights hosted by the astronomy department, allowing visitors to view stars and planets with guidance from researchers on site. These gatherings connect the university community and the public around a shared interest in the night sky.

Visiting works best on clear nights with minimal light interference, making the department's organized events the most reliable way to access the facility. Plan ahead since operation depends on academic schedules and weather conditions.

The 2009 construction of Northwest Corner Building significantly limited the telescope's field of view, creating unexpected challenges for observations from this rooftop site. This architectural development sparked discussions about the facility's future and potential relocation plans.
