Lee-Fendall House, Historic house museum in Old Town Alexandria, United States.
The Lee-Fendall House is a historic house museum in the Greek Revival style, located in the Old Town neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. The interior features rooms furnished to reflect different periods of the home's life, and the property also includes a historic garden at the rear.
The house was built in 1785 and stayed in Lee family hands for several generations. During the Civil War, Union forces took it over and used it as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
The house tells the story of both the wealthy Lee family and the enslaved people who lived and worked within its walls. Visitors can see how two very different worlds shared the same space, something that becomes clear as you move from room to room.
The house has several floors connected by staircases, so expect to do some climbing during the visit. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, as you will spend most of the time on your feet moving between rooms.
Over its history, around 37 members of the Lee family lived in this house at various times, making it unusual for how many generations passed through the same rooms. After the Civil War, the house was later home to a labor union leader, marking a sharp change from its earlier association with the Southern planter class.
