Gadsby's Tavern Museum, Historical museum in Old Town Alexandria, United States.
Gadsby's Tavern Museum consists of two connected buildings: a Georgian-style tavern from 1785 and a Federal-style hotel from 1792. Both structures display period furnishings, kitchen equipment, and personal objects that bring the era to life.
The tavern was built in 1785 as a gathering place for merchants and travelers in Alexandria. Under John Gadsby's management starting in 1796, it became known as a place where prominent figures of the young United States stayed.
The building reflects how people gathered, dined, and conducted business in the late 1700s. You can see how the spaces served both daily activities and social occasions.
The museum can be explored with guided tours or at your own pace. The rooms are connected by narrow staircases and historic corridors, so wear comfortable shoes and expect some uneven floors.
An original ice well sits beneath the courtyard, surviving more than 200 years. This underground chamber shows how people stored food before electric refrigeration existed.
