Mansion House Hospital, Civil War hospital building in Alexandria, US.
Mansion House Hospital is a former hotel building in Alexandria, Virginia, that was converted into a military hospital during the Civil War. The four-story structure stood next to the Carlyle House and served as a treatment center for Union soldiers.
The Union Army took over the Mansion House Hotel in November 1861 and turned it into a military hospital within weeks. It remained in operation throughout the Civil War, receiving wounded soldiers from nearby battlefields.
Female nurses, including Mary Phinney, recorded their work at this hospital and helped advance women's roles in medicine. Their writings show how women took on significant responsibility during the Civil War and shaped modern nursing.
The site is now part of the Carlyle House Historic Park, managed by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. A visit to the park gives access to information about the building and its role during the war.
Mary Phinney, one of the nurses who worked here, kept detailed journals about her daily life in the hospital. Her writings are among the most personal accounts of wartime nursing from the Civil War period.
