University of Mississippi Field Station, Research station in Oxford, Mississippi
The University of Mississippi Field Station is a 740-acre research facility containing forests, wetlands, and grasslands situated in a V-shaped valley northeast of Oxford. Over 200 experimental ponds and streams across the property support biological studies and ecological research projects.
The facility was established to conduct studies on freshwater river ecosystems and their management within the lower Mississippi River Basin system. It grew out of the need to better understand and protect water resources and wetlands in the region.
The facility serves as a learning space where students and researchers work alongside each other to observe natural systems firsthand. Educational programs connect local communities to the wetlands and forests that shape the region.
The site is easiest to reach by car and is located roughly 11 miles from downtown. Your visit possibilities depend on ongoing research programs, so checking ahead about access and guided tours is recommended.
The property contains year-round springs and seeps that create rare conditions for studying upland watershed environments. These permanent water sources allow scientists to observe processes that are otherwise difficult to track.
