University of Mississippi Power House, Former electricity plant at University of Mississippi, Oxford, United States
The industrial red brick building supplied electrical power to both the University of Mississippi campus and Oxford town during nighttime operations.
Built in 1908 as a central power facility, the structure remained operational until its demolition in 2016 after serving the university for over a century.
William Faulkner wrote sections of his novel 'As I Lay Dying' while working as night supervisor at the Power House during winter 1929.
The University plans to create a new commemorative space at the location using a $5 million donation from the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation.
Faulkner used the back of a wheelbarrow as his writing surface during night shifts when power demand remained minimal.
