University of Mississippi Power House, Former electricity plant at University of Mississippi, Oxford, United States
The University of Mississippi Power House was an industrial red brick building that supplied electricity to the campus and Oxford town. The facility was equipped with machinery to generate steady power around the clock for both institutions.
The building was constructed in 1908 as a central power facility and served for more than a century. The structure was demolished in 2016 after its role became obsolete.
William Faulkner worked here as a night supervisor and used quiet hours for his writing. The place is linked to a major American author who would later become one of the nation's most important literary figures.
The site no longer exists today, but the university plans to establish a memorial space at this location. Visitors can learn about the location's history through campus information resources.
During night shifts, Faulkner wrote on the back of a wheelbarrow. This unconventional writing surface shows how he adapted creatively to his surroundings.
