Kehilas Yetev Lev D'Satmar - Main Zalonim, Hasidic synagogue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, United States
Kehilas Yetev Lev D'Satmar is a Hasidic synagogue on Rodney Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, used for Orthodox Jewish worship by one of the largest Hasidic communities in the world. The main sanctuary is a wide hall with separate sections for men and women, as required by traditional Jewish law.
The Satmar community was founded by Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, who arrived in the United States after World War II and settled in Williamsburg. The current building on Rodney Street was constructed after the congregation outgrew its earlier location on Bedford Avenue.
The congregation follows the Satmar rite, a strict Hasidic tradition that shapes everything visible inside the building. Men wear traditional black coats and fur hats on Shabbat, and prayers are chanted in Yiddish and Hebrew.
This is an active place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly and behave respectfully at all times. Men and women enter through separate doors and sit in different sections of the hall.
On the high holidays, crowds gather in the streets surrounding the building because the interior cannot hold everyone who attends. The rabbi's sermon is broadcast through loudspeakers so that all those outside can follow along.
