Nathan Clifford School, Historic school building in Portland, United States.
Nathan Clifford School at 180 Falmouth Street is a three-story brick building featuring Classical Revival architectural details with stone ornaments. The structure was later converted into 22 residential apartments while keeping its original exterior appearance intact.
The building was constructed from 1907 to 1909 by architect John Calvin Stevens and functioned as an elementary school. It closed during the 20th century and was later registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
The building is named after Nathan Clifford, who served in the nation's highest legal positions. The school reflects the community's commitment to education and honors a significant historical figure from Maine.
The building sits on a residential street and is easily visible from the sidewalk where you can observe its architectural features. Since it is now private housing, interior access is not available, but the outside walls and stonework can be examined from the street.
From 1932 to 1964 the school housed Maine's first specialized education program for children with vision impairments. This pioneering role made it a significant location in the state's history of special education.
