First Presbyterian Church of Newtown, Presbyterian church building in Elmhurst, Queens, United States.
The First Presbyterian Church of Newtown is a church building in Elmhurst, Queens, constructed with granite and brownstone materials. The structure features an 85-foot bell tower and steep slate roof that stand out along Seabury Street.
The building was founded in 1652 by English settlers during Dutch rule and received its charter from the Philadelphia Presbytery in 1715. The congregation moved to its present location in the 1920s.
The congregation brings together people from many different countries and backgrounds. This reflects how the neighborhood has grown into a place where diverse communities live and worship side by side.
The church is located on Seabury Street and offers activities throughout the week for visitors to participate in. It is helpful to check ahead about current gathering times and what programs are available on different days.
In the 1920s, the entire church structure was moved backward half a block to make room for Queens Boulevard to expand. This was a remarkable feat of engineering and planning for its time.
