Franklin Park Conservatory, Botanical garden and conservatory in Columbus, United States
Franklin Park Conservatory is a botanical garden and glasshouse in Columbus, the capital of Ohio. The facility includes several climate-controlled glass buildings housing plants from rainforests, deserts, and mountain regions, along with outdoor gardens that change with the seasons.
The Victorian glasshouse opened in 1895 and drew inspiration from the Glass Palace at the Chicago World Fair of 1893. Later, the building gained recognition as a national historic site.
The name honors a nineteenth-century city park. Today the glasshouse displays changing art objects among the plant beds, which visitors discover while walking through.
The facility offers regular cooking demonstrations, gardening classes, and butterfly releases in the heated glasshouses. Paths inside the buildings are flat and wheelchair-friendly, while outdoor areas may include some hills.
Some palms and cycads date back to the founding years and are over 125 years old. These specimens still grow in the historic glasshouses and rank among the oldest living collection pieces at the facility.
