Founders Bridge, Road bridge in Hartford, United States
Founders Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Connecticut River between Hartford and East Hartford. It carries traffic across seven lanes and features a wide sidewalk for pedestrians and cyclists to cross between the two communities.
The bridge opened in 1957 as a replacement for an older crossing that could no longer handle growing traffic demands. A major renovation in the 1990s expanded its capacity and improved facilities for people crossing on foot or by bicycle.
The structure forms part of the East Coast Greenway, integrating into a network of trails stretching from Maine to Florida.
Traffic is heaviest during morning and evening commute times, when many vehicles cross between the two communities. Pedestrian paths along the bridge provide access to riverside trails and nearby recreational areas for breaks or exploring.
During its 1994 renovation, construction teams maintained traffic flow while adding new lanes, wider sidewalks, and connections to riverfront recreational areas.
