New Market Battlefield State Historical Park

New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is a Civil War battle site spanning several hundred acres with preserved structures and multiple areas where fighting took place. The park includes a museum featuring weapons, uniforms, and personal belongings that belonged to soldiers from both sides.

The major battle occurred in 1864 and resulted in a Confederate victory when regular soldiers fought alongside military academy cadets against Union troops. This engagement happened during a period when such victories had become rare for the Southern cause.

The place held deep meaning for families caught between two armies during the fighting. Local residents' homes became shelters and supply centers, showing how the conflict touched everyday lives.

The site is easy to reach and offers pathways to explore different areas of the battlefield. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and visitors should allow time to visit the museum and view the collections.
