Commonwealth Avenue Mall, Park in Boston, United States

Commonwealth Avenue Mall is a long green strip of lawns, benches, and tall shade trees running along the middle of a wide boulevard in Boston. The path cuts straight through several blocks, with brick sidewalks, iron entrance gates, and sculptures placed at regular points under the tree canopy.

The ground beneath the trees was once tidal water before the Back Bay was filled in during the nineteenth century. The park’s layout was first proposed in the 1850s, and an early statue of Alexander Hamilton was placed here in 1865 as the area turned into a formal residential avenue.

Statues along the walk give the place a quiet, memorial quality, and many people pause near the bronze figures of writers and reformers rather than simply passing by. The wide central strip is used for slow walks, dog outings, and reading on benches, which gives this stretch of the city a routine, everyday calm.

The central walkway is flat and wide, so strolling between the two rows of trees is easy for most visitors. Since the park is open to the surrounding streets, you can enter at any block and follow the same straight path without worrying about getting lost.

The modern tree variety comes from replanting work done after a fungal disease killed many of the original elms, so what stands here today is a mix rather than a single historic row. A few old American elms still survive among the newer plantings, hidden in plain sight above the walkway.
