Saint Mary, Mother of God Catholic Church

Saint Mary, Mother of God is a Catholic church in Chinatown featuring Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, with detailed stone facades and tall stained glass windows throughout. The building stands on Fifth Street Northwest and serves as a visible landmark in the neighborhood with its substantial brick and stone construction.

German immigrants founded the church in 1845 to establish a Catholic community in the area. The current building was constructed between 1890 and 1891 based on designs by architects Baldwin & Pennington.

The church serves multiple communities through regular services offered in both English and Chinese, reflecting its role in the neighborhood. People from different backgrounds gather here to worship and maintain their spiritual traditions together.

The church is located on Fifth Street Northwest and can be reached easily by public transportation or on foot. Visitors should note that it becomes most crowded during service times, particularly on Sundays, so arriving early is advisable for a more comfortable experience.

Inside the church sits an original George S. Hutchings organ from Boston, installed when the building was completed in 1891. This instrument has remained functional for more than 130 years and contributes a distinctive sound during services.
