National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, Law enforcement memorial in Judiciary Square, Washington DC, United States.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial consists of two curving limestone walls extending 93 meters (304 feet) and engraved with officer names. The walls surround a paved courtyard with small trees and benches that invite quiet reflection.
The monument opened in 1991 after several years of planning and fundraising efforts. Engraved names reach back to 1786 and are regularly updated to include newly fallen officers.
Family members and colleagues gather during National Police Week each spring for remembrance ceremonies. Visitors leave flowers and badges at the base while names are read aloud from the walls.
The plaza is open to the public at all hours, allowing visitors to arrive at their own pace. Directories at the four entry points help locate specific names on the walls through alphabetical and agency listings.
Four bronze lion statues guard the entrances, each weighing over 1100 kilograms (2500 pounds). The animals were designed so that one lion watches while the others rest, symbolizing constant protection.
