William H. Taft Mansion, Second Empire mansion in New Haven, Connecticut, US

The William H. Taft Mansion is a Second Empire structure in New Haven situated on Whitney Avenue with a distinctive mansard roof and ornate cornices. The three-story house displays typical features of the style, including grand staircases and multiple spacious levels for different living areas.

The house was built in 1870 and gained national attention when President William Howard Taft acquired it during World War I. He retained ownership until 1921, making it a residence of historical importance.

The mansion displays the taste of wealthy families from the 1800s through its elaborate Second Empire architecture and carefully designed interior spaces. Visitors can see the decorative details and room layouts that showcased wealth and social standing.

The building currently serves as office space spread across multiple floors with an associated parking area. Visitors should plan ahead as its use as a private property may limit access.

In 1920 the residence was burglarized by criminal Carl Panzram, who stole a firearm that he later used during a series of crimes across the country. This break-in connects the house to a lesser-known episode of American criminal history.
