Mueller Tower, Bell tower at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, United States
Mueller Tower is a bell tower on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, standing 84 feet (26 meters) tall with limestone construction. The structure features eight speakers that broadcast recorded music across the university grounds.
The tower was built in 1948-1949 following a major gift from a graduate of the class of 1898 who wanted to honor his free education. The project marked the completion of an architecture student's design that was brought to life at this location.
The tower broadcasts musical selections every hour and at the 23-minute mark through its digital carillon system. These sounds shape the rhythm of campus life and create a shared acoustic experience for the university community.
The tower sits on the west campus, roughly 600 feet east of Memorial Stadium and is easily accessible on foot. The best time to visit is during daytime hours when musical broadcasts occur most frequently and the grounds are well-lit.
The tower was designed and realized as a senior architecture student's thesis project before he earned his degree. This unusual situation made the young architect an integral part of the campus before he even graduated.
