Sheldon Museum of Art, Art museum at University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, United States.
The Sheldon Museum of Art is a university art museum on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, housed in a modernist building designed by architect Philip Johnson. The collection comprises nearly thirteen thousand works spanning American art from the nineteenth century to contemporary practice, with thirty large-scale sculptures placed throughout the campus grounds.
The museum opened in nineteen sixty-three, building on the foundation of the Sheldon Art Association established in eighteen eighty-eight. The American Alliance of Museums granted accreditation in nineteen seventy-two, recognizing its professional standing early in its history.
The museum presents American art collections spanning from 19th-century landscapes to contemporary works, with thirty monumental sculptures displayed across university grounds.
The museum stands at the corner of Twelfth and R Streets and opens Monday through Wednesday from ten to five, Thursday and Friday until seven, Saturday ten to five, and Sunday noon to five. Admission is free and the galleries are level and accessible throughout.
The outdoor sculptures spread across the entire university grounds, turning the campus into a walkable exhibition space. Visitors can encounter works by Richard Serra, Mark di Suvero, and Claes Oldenburg between lecture halls and lawns.
