Shirley Chisholm State Park, State park in Spring Creek Brooklyn, US.
Shirley Chisholm State Park is a green space in Spring Creek, Brooklyn, covering about 407 acres with wetlands, woodlands, and access to Jamaica Bay. A network of about 10 miles of trails winds through the different habitats within its boundaries.
The land was once two municipal landfills operating until 1983 and was later cleaned up and restored. The park opened to the public in July 2019 as a renewed public space.
The park honors Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman in Congress, through educational programs and a mural created by artist Danielle Mastrion. Visitors can engage with her story and learn about her political journey.
The park operates daily from 8 AM until dusk and offers free fishing clinics and bicycle borrowing services. Wear sturdy shoes for the trails and be prepared for weather changes as you move through open areas near the water.
The park sits on engineered elevated terrain rising about 140 feet above sea level, designed specifically to withstand strong winds from Jamaica Bay. This special engineering allows the space to handle extreme weather conditions without compromise.
