Hermosa Bungalow Historic District, Historic residential district in Hermosa neighborhood, Chicago, US.
Hermosa Bungalow Historic District is a residential area containing 298 bungalows, 15 brick apartment buildings, and 8 brick two-flats on Chicago's northwest side. The properties occupy multiple blocks between Belmont Avenue and Diversey Avenue, stretching from Lowell Avenue to Kolmar Avenue.
The homes were built between 1910 and 1930 as Chicago expanded rapidly and factory workers needed affordable housing. This growth occurred during the city's major industrial expansion when many people moved in to work in manufacturing.
Italian, Polish, and Mexican families shaped how these homes look and how the streets feel through their building choices and daily life patterns. You can see this heritage in decorative details, yard styles, and the way neighbors still use public spaces today.
The district is best explored on foot since it spreads across multiple blocks with manageable distances between sections. Starting from the eastern streets and moving west helps you notice how the building styles and details change as you walk through different areas.
This district received its National Register listing only in 2018, making it one of Chicago's more recently recognized historic neighborhoods. The late designation shows how long it took for these ordinary worker homes to be valued as part of the city's heritage.
