Riis Park, Historic district in Belmont-Cragin, Chicago, United States.
Riis Park is a large green space covering more than 50 acres with a fieldhouse designed by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. It features sports fields, walking paths, and open areas designed for neighborhood recreation and community use.
The park was established in 1928 with recreational facilities that included winter sports amenities. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
The park is named after Jacob Riis, a journalist who exposed harsh working and living conditions in cities through his photography and writing. Today, visitors experience it as a gathering place where neighborhood residents of all ages come together for recreation and community events.
The park is located at 6100 West Fullerton Avenue and remains open year-round for various activities. Visitors should plan their visit based on seasonal weather and explore the different zones to find activities that suit their interests.
The original 1928 design included a ski jump structure, an unusual feature for a city park in Chicago. This winter sports facility was built when the area experienced more regular snowfall during certain seasons.
