13th Regiment Armory

The 13th Regiment Armory is a military building in Brooklyn now used as a shelter for homeless people. The structure displays features typical of late 1800s military architecture, including stone entrances with towers and a large covered drill hall.

The building was constructed in the 1890s for the New York State Militia and served for many years as a military installation. In the 1980s it was converted for a new purpose as homelessness in the city grew.

The facility carries a name connected to community ideals and is now run by an organization focused on helping veterans and homeless individuals. People staying there are men facing difficult circumstances who find shelter and support within its walls.

The original construction budget was much lower, but costs doubled as the work progressed, sparking major controversy in local newspapers. This cost overrun made the project a noted scandal of its era.
