Tifft Nature Preserve

Tifft Nature Preserve is a nature preserve in Buffalo featuring wetlands, meadows, and woodlands across its grounds. Trails throughout the property connect these different ecological zones for visitors to explore.

The land was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was acquired in 1858 by George Washington Tifft, who developed it as a dairy farm. The agricultural property was later transformed into a nature preserve.

The preserve connects to the Buffalo Museum of Science and serves visitors as a place to learn about local ecosystems and environmental protection. Educational programs here show how people interact with nature in this region.

The preserve is accessible through a visitor center with exhibits and offers guided walks during different seasons. Wear sturdy shoes since the trails pass through varied terrain that can be wet depending on the time of year.

A cattail marsh covering about 30 hectares provides habitat for raptors and waterfowl that migrate through the area. This wetland serves as a critical stopping point where traveling birds find food and shelter during seasonal migrations.
