Ned Flanders Crossing, Pedestrian footbridge over I-405 in Portland, United States.
Ned Flanders Crossing is a footbridge spanning Interstate 405 and connecting the Northwest District to the Pearl District in Portland. The steel structure provides a wide, protected path where people on foot and bicycles can safely cross the highway between these two neighborhoods.
The bridge opened in 2021 to finally address a transportation gap that had existed since the interstate was built in 1969. Before this crossing was completed, residents and workers had no safe way to cross the highway between the two neighborhoods on foot.
The bridge honors Portland native Matt Groening by referencing his character Ned Flanders from The Simpsons television series, marking the first official recognition point.
The bridge has a smooth, wide pathway that is easy to walk or bike across without difficulty. Traffic signals at street level help guide people safely onto and off the bridge at the connecting intersections.
A bronze plaque on the bridge honors Portland cartoonist Matt Groening through the character Ned Flanders, including his famous wave gesture. This unexpected tribute makes the crossing a hidden memorial to a beloved local creator.
