Crystal Ballroom, Historic dance venue in Portland, United States
The Crystal Ballroom sits inside a three-story brick building with high ceilings and large windows from the early 20th century. The main hall extends across a large area with a raised stage at one end and balconies along both sides.
The building opened in 1914 and served as a dance hall and event space across the decades. After renovation in the 1990s, the hall resumed activity as a concert venue.
The name refers to the former elegant décor with chandeliers and mirrors that gave the room a sparkling appearance. Locals come here today to dance at concerts and feel the special floor movement beneath their feet.
Most events take place in the evening, with door times varying depending on the program. The hall is centrally located in Portland and easily reached by public transport.
The spring-mounted dance floor from the 1920s moves slightly with every step and gives dancers a floating feeling. This construction with ball bearings beneath the wooden panels is rare in North America.
