Niabi Zoo, Zoological park in Coal Valley, Illinois, US
Niabi Zoo is a 40-acre facility where more than 600 animals from roughly 200 species live in designed habitats. The space sits within a larger forest preserve that gives the animals room and visitors plenty of paths to explore.
The site started in 1959 as a private animal farm called McLain's Wild Animal Farm. Patti Wiman later took over the property and donated it to the Rock Island County Forest Preserve District in 1963.
The name Niabi comes from the Wazhazhe language of the Osage Nation and means 'the fawn spared by the hunter'. This indigenous connection shapes the identity visitors encounter throughout the space.
The zoo is open Tuesday through Sunday with various attractions like train rides, carousels, and giraffe feeding opportunities available. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to walk the different areas at a relaxed pace.
The White Rhino habitat that opened in 2021 marks the beginning of a major renovation plan for the site. Additional exhibits for African Painted Dogs and Prairie Dogs are planned as part of this ongoing modernization effort.
