Villa de Chantal Historic District, Catholic education complex in Rock Island, Illinois
Villa de Chantal Historic District was an educational complex of three main buildings in Gothic Revival style with octagonal towers and patterned brick facades. The complex once spread across 15 acres and now houses a math and science center.
The school was founded in 1901 by the Sisters of the Visitation from Maysville, Kentucky and quickly grew into a large campus. It was an established center for girls' education in the region for over 75 years.
The place was known for educating artists and musicians, offering girls a complete education across multiple subjects. The school shaped several generations of students until it closed in the late 1970s.
The property is located in Rock Island and is now part of the school district, so access may be limited. It is best to visit the exterior to view the architecture and grounds.
One of the towers contained a bell specially transported from Kentucky that served as a distinctive feature of the complex. This bell was located in the western octagonal tower and symbolized the connection to its founding location.
