Pawtucket Looff Carousel, Historic wooden carousel in Slater Memorial Park, Pawtucket, United States
The Pawtucket Looff Carousel is a wooden ride featuring 44 standing horses and 6 menagerie animals, including a camel, three dogs, a giraffe, and a lion, along with two wooden chariots. The structure displays detailed carving from the late 1800s and stands as a focal point in Slater Memorial Park.
Charles Looff built the carousel in 1895 and it originally operated at Lee Funland in New York. It relocated to Pawtucket in 1910, where it has remained in the park ever since.
The carousel bears the name of its creator Charles Looff, reflecting his legacy in American amusement craftsmanship. Visitors today can observe how the carved animals and chariots demonstrate the level of artistry that went into public entertainment in the early 1900s.
The ride is best visited during warmer months when Slater Memorial Park is most active and rides are available daily. The location is easily accessible by foot through the park and works well as a family activity.
The carousel retains its original North Tonawanda Military band organ, a rare element from its initial equipment. This makes it one of the few Looff carousels worldwide still operating with its original musical accompaniment.
