Young Israel of Flatbush, Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Midwood, Brooklyn, United States
Young Israel of Flatbush is a synagogue featuring Moorish Revival architecture with horseshoe arches, minarets, and decorative patterned brickwork at 1012 Avenue I in Brooklyn. The three-story building served as a spiritual center for the local Jewish community over many decades.
Founded in 1921, the synagogue held its first services in March 1922 after members separated from another congregation to form their own community. In 2021, the congregation merged with a neighboring synagogue and relocated its operations to continue serving the community.
The congregation drew families who wanted to pass down their Jewish traditions through regular education and community events. Visitors could sense how the community centered its life around religious practice and learning for younger generations.
The building on Avenue I displays its Moorish architectural features best from the exterior, where the detailed arches and minarets are clearly visible. Since the congregation relocated to a new address, visitors should check ahead to understand which activities take place at the different locations.
The congregation became large enough that government officials reviewed its request to appoint multiple assistant rabbis, an unusual administrative matter for a religious community. This incident reflects how substantial and growing the community had become during its active years.
