Erasmus Hall High School, High school in Flatbush, Brooklyn, United States.
Erasmus Hall High School is an educational institution in Flatbush, Brooklyn, where several programs operate under one roof. An eighteenth-century Georgian-Federal academy building stands at the center of an enclosed courtyard, surrounded by Gothic structures built in later decades.
The institution began in 1786 as Erasmus Hall Academy and became the first secondary school chartered by the New York State Regents with support from Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the school expanded with new buildings that enclosed the old core.
Since 1994, the campus has operated as five independent schools, each with its own academic focus but sharing the same historic buildings. The separate programs coexist within the old walls, using common spaces like the library and gymnasium.
Visitors can see the campus from Flatbush Avenue, where the older and newer buildings form a closed courtyard. The school is an active educational facility, so tours or visits require advance arrangement.
Archaeological excavations in 1987 uncovered intact layers from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that document the evolution of education at this site. The finds reveal everyday life of students and teachers over more than two centuries.
