Stadtmuller House

The Stadtmuller House at 819 Eddy Street is a two-story residential building in the Italianate style with pronounced details including ornate brackets, arched windows, and bay windows. The facade features a prominent entry portico that emphasizes the main entrance and gives the building classical proportions.

German merchant Frederick D. Stadtmuller hired architect Peter R. Schmidt to build this residence in 1880 during a period of rapid growth in San Francisco. The house was constructed when wealthy businessmen were building large homes that drew from European architectural styles.

The house reflects how European immigrants who came to San Francisco in the late 1800s chose to build their homes with styles that reminded them of their origins. The ornate details show how wealthy families displayed their success through elaborate architectural decoration.
