Edificio Zingg, Commercial building in central Caracas, Venezuela.
Edificio Zingg is a multistory commercial building with a steel frame in central Caracas that links University Avenue and Society Street through an interior covered passage. The passage contains retail spaces and serves as a pedestrian walkway connecting these two major thoroughfares.
German businessman Gustavo Zingg commissioned architect Oskar Herzl to design this structure, which opened in 1940 with advanced construction methods new to Venezuela. The building pioneered earthquake-resistant engineering techniques that became influential in the country's architecture.
The building's covered walkway has long served as a passage where people cut through the downtown area, and the retail spaces still define how locals move between different neighborhoods.
The building is easily accessible on foot and the passage functions as a natural shortcut through the downtown block. It blends well into the city center, making it simple to visit while exploring the surrounding area.
The building introduced Venezuela's first mechanical escalators in the 1950s when its commercial gallery was upgraded with this technology. This innovation made it a notable example of modernization in the country during that era.
