Tranquility Farm

Tranquility Farm is a large estate on the east side of Lake Quassapaug featuring open meadows, stone walls, and wooded areas. The main house sits near the intersection of Tranquility and Whittemore Roads, with multiple building clusters scattered across the landscape.

The estate was commissioned in 1895 by industrialist John H. Whittemore and designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. It reflects the era when wealthy business leaders created grand country properties as seasonal retreats.

The estate shows how wealthy industrialists of the late 1800s designed their summer residence, blending spacious living areas with practical farm buildings on the property.

The property is expansive and requires time to explore the different areas and buildings. Wearing good walking shoes is recommended as you move through meadows and along stone pathways.

The property contains a 40-foot tall concrete stave silo topped with a mansard roof and twin cupolas featuring hipped pagoda-style roofs. This unusual structure blends industrial function with elaborate architectural detail.
