Sï-Shen-Tsï Methodist Church

The Sï-Shen-Tsï Methodist Church is a Protestant church building in Chengdu featuring Neo-Gothic design, solid brick walls, and wooden floors. The structure rises approximately 18 meters (59 feet) high and occupies roughly 3,000 square meters (32,000 square feet) of land.

A Canadian Methodist Mission established this building in 1894 as a place of worship and community service. After suffering damage during the anti-religious upheaval of the 1890s and the Boxer Rebellion around 1900, the structure was reconstructed and renovated multiple times.

The church displays Western architectural features blended with Chinese design elements, showing how Protestant and local traditions came together in a single building. Walking through the space, visitors can see this mix reflected in both the structure and decorative details.

The building operates under the Three-Self Patriotic Church framework, which means it is an active place of worship serving the community with regular religious services. Visitors should expect that the building remains in active use and may have restricted access during worship times.

The building underwent a major expansion in 1911 that doubled its capacity, funded in part by a significant financial gift from supporters. This growth reflected the expanding congregation and outside backing that helped the place thrive during that period.
