Antiguo Monasterio de Santa Clara

The Antiguo Monasterio de Santa Clara is a Gothic monastery in Moguer featuring three naves divided by pointed arches, with the central nave extending wider and longer than the lateral ones. The structure now serves as a museum displaying religious objects and art from the region.

The monastery was founded in 1337 by Alonso Jofre Tenorio, the first lord of Moguer, and housed Clarisse nuns for centuries. It played an important role in shaping the region's development over time.

The church holds a remarkable 14th-century choir stall with Nasrid elements, showing how Moorish craftsmanship traditions continued to influence Andalusian artisans at that time. The intricate carved details remain visible as you walk through the interior.

The building is now accessible as the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Huelva, displaying religious objects and hosting rotating cultural exhibitions. Visitors can walk through the Gothic interior and observe the structural elements that define the space.

Christopher Columbus prayed within these walls on March 16, 1493, shortly after returning from his first voyage to the Americas. This moment connects the site to one of history's most pivotal journeys.
