Iglesia de San Jorge

Iglesia de San Jorge is a Gothic church in Palos de la Frontera with three naves built in the Mudejar style, featuring pointed arches throughout its interior. The structure has two distinctive entrances, including the stone Door of America.

The building was constructed in the Gothic style and became a place of great significance for maritime history. In May 1492, the royal decree was read here ordering Palos residents to provide two caravels for Columbus's voyage.

The church displays a blend of Gothic and Mudejar elements, visible on the north side through geometric patterns in traditional two-tone brickwork. This combination reflects the region's cultural layering across centuries.

The church sits at an elevated position in the eastern part of town and is easily visible from many vantage points. Its location next to a historic fountain makes it straightforward to find and explore the surrounding area.

Through the Puerta de los Novios, Columbus and his crew took their final steps on Spanish ground before departing on August 3, 1492. This doorway marks the symbolic point of departure before one of history's most consequential voyages.
