The Columbus Monument consists of a 57-meter-tall column topped with a 7-meter statue of Christopher Columbus pointing towards the Mediterranean Sea.
The monument was inaugurated on June 1, 1888, during the Barcelona Universal Exhibition, after seven years of construction and substantial municipal funding.
The monument features eight medallions dedicated to historical figures, including Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand, along with allegorical statues representing Spanish regions.
Visitors can access an observation platform via an internal elevator, providing a panoramic view of Barcelona from beneath the Columbus statue.
The statue's finger points east rather than west, directing towards Genoa instead of the Americas as originally intended.
