Huelva, Municipality and port city in southwestern Andalusia, Spain
Huelva is a municipality and port settlement in southwestern Andalusia, positioned between the Odiel and Tinto rivers along the Atlantic coast. Residential neighborhoods spread across gentle hills inland, while harbor areas line the estuaries and dock vessels from different regions.
The territory emerged as a Phoenician settlement in the 9th century BC and later became a Roman trading post, recognized for copper and silver extraction. Mariners from different epochs used the sheltered river mouths as anchorage for their ships during trading voyages.
The settlement preserves the Ibero-American Film Festival, which honors productions from Spain, Portugal and Latin American nations through screenings and competitions. Visitors can meet filmmakers during the event and experience the cultural ties between both sides of the Atlantic.
The central railway station links the core to Seville and Madrid, while the harbor handles commercial shipping and fishing operations throughout the year. Visitors find numerous cafés and eateries on the streets near the pedestrian zone, where locals spend their afternoons.
The settlement houses Recreativo de Huelva, established in 1889 and recognized as the first football club in Spain. Supporters still gather at the old stadium, which experienced many changes over the decades yet retained its character.
