River Seiont, river in Wales
The River Seiont flows through Gwynedd in Wales, beginning near Llanberis where it collects water from Llyn Padarn before winding northwest toward the Menai Strait. It ends in Caernarfon Bay and its rocks display geological layers of special scientific interest.
The river held strategic importance during Roman times and gave its name to the military fort Segontium. In medieval times the area remained significant, particularly when Caernarfon Castle was built, standing prominently above the water.
The name Seiont comes from ancient times and links to a Roman fort called Segontium, with the original Brythonic name meaning 'strong place'. This naming reflects how the river held importance for local communities throughout history.
The area is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest with no public access, so visitors cannot freely walk the protected land. You can observe the river from outside the protected zone and enjoy views of the landscape from near Caernarfon Castle.
The river changes its name to Rhythallt between the village of Llanrug and its mouth, a local detail showing how different communities have called it over time. This naming variation reflects local language history and the region's connection to its waterway.
